Food is the most basic need of the human race. We know from anthropological research that food culture has developed silently in the context of human civilization passing through various stages. Food is not only physical. It is also mental and cultural. The ancient Tamils fulfilled their needs without any deficiency with the types of food grown in the environment in which they lived. It can be seen that the habit of eating without luxury and simplicity was prevalent among the ancient Tamils. The ancient Tamils developed their food culture according to the need and production of food according to the land, water, environment and seasonal changes in which they lived. They not only ate that food themselves but also enjoyed giving it to others. This article attempts to examine this with some understanding based on the records contained in the ancient Tamil literary songs.
